While growing up and attending school in Lanett, Alabama, he was actively involved in playing football and baseball. Shortly after graduating from high school, William joined the Navy in 1952, serving much of his four years in the Far East. Upon his return to Alabama, he worked for West Point Pepperell Textile Mills, attended Auburn University, and married Peggy Mae Duffey, whom he had known since high school, on August 25, 1957.
In 1964, William graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, focusing on accounting. He was then employed by the Army/Air Force Exchange Services. During his nearly thirty years with AAFES, he was assigned to various installations in North Carolina, Georgia, Texas, Philippines, California, New Hampshire, and Okinawa, finally settling in Duncanville, Texas where he retired in 1993.
His retirement years were filled with family visits to Alabama, vacationing on the Florida coast, and playing golf. Due to the ability to play golf for free, William spent several years working part time at Tangle Ridge golf course in Grand Prairie, Texas. His greatest accomplishment however was his love and dedication to his wife and two sons. William’s sense of humor and easy-going spirit will be dearly missed.
William is preceded in death by his mother and father, Lawton and Alpha Gaylor, his brother Robert, and his sister, Jeanette Owens.
He is survived by his wife of over sixty-five years, Peggy, his sons Coy (Rose) Gaylor of Carrollton, Texas and Steve Gaylor of Azle, Texas, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces, and grand nephews.
