He was born on August 12, 1965 in Ouachita, Louisiana and because of his father’s career in petroleum oil, spent most of his childhood moving around the country. His family eventually settled in Evergreen, Colorado where Gary spent his high school years. He was a 1984 graduate of Evergreen High School in Evergreen, Colorado where he met the love of his life, Jorie McCright. They went on to attend college together at OU, married in 1989, and started a beautiful family together, raising a daughter and three sons.
At a young age, Gary found a love for football, which lasted throughout his life. Gary played football through high school and went on to play for the University of Oklahoma, where his team won the National Championship in 1985. Playing at the college level was a dream for Gary; and although football was life, he also earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management while he was at OU. He was an OU Sooner fan for life and enjoyed watching and attending college football games. Gary was a coach for TCYFA (The Colony Youth Football Association) for nearly 15 years, which allowed him the pleasure of coaching his three sons. Being his kids’ biggest fan, Gary was able to cheer on his sons, Chris and Cameron, when they played football for Texas Lutheran University, and his son Colton during his basketball games.
Gary spent his career in sales for janitorial companies. His passion for sales and his experience in the janitorial supply business allowed him to start up BB&G Janitorial, which he owned and operated for ten years, working alongside his dad and sister.
Gary relished everything that life had to offer. His charismatic personality gave him the ability to be a friend to all, by never meeting a stranger. His ability to make others laugh and making the most out of any situation was truly a gift. Gary was generous and kind, and enjoyed doing for others. His faith was important to him and he was a member of First Baptist Church at the Fields. He had a deep love and knowledge for music, which he enjoyed sharing with his family. Gary enjoyed fishing, especially on Lake Fork, Texas. His time spent on the water and casting his line brought him great joy and brought a sense of peace to Gary. He also enjoyed his time tending to the smoker. Smoking meats turned into a hobby and then into a small business as Gary mastered the smoked brisket. He was an animal lover, and especially loved his dogs, Scooter, Clementine, Roscoe, Beau, and Tilly, who brought him an immense amount of joy over the years.
More than anything, Gary loved his family. He was a devoted husband, dad, and brother. He was always there for them – to solve their problems and fix everything. Time spent with them was what he valued the most in life. His love for his family ran deep and leaves a legacy of love, devotion, and laughter that will live on for generations to come.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, William Gary Bennett and Donna June Brooks. He is survived by his soulmate and wife of 33 years, Jorie Bennett; daughter and son-in-law, Brianna & Josh Morrison of Farmers Branch; son and daughter-in-law, Christopher & Hannah Bennett of San Antonio; sons, Cameron Bennett of San Antonio and Colton Bennett of The Colony; his first expected grandchild; sister and brother-in-law, Lacye & Ryan Lemke of Burleson; and nephews Jeff Bowman of Fort Worth and Jason Bowman and Tara Schaible of Burleson, Texas.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 17th at 2:00 pm at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes or Embrace Texas, a foster and adoption services organization.
