Vera Jean Spurlock was born in Japton, Arkansas. She had two brothers, Edward and Austin, and three sisters, Zelma, Erma and Veda. Her parents, Lewis and Mattie Spurlock, moved their family to southern California when Jean was 8 years old. She loved growing up in Orange County and enjoyed all the outdoor activities; the beach and volleyball were among her favorites.
She married her favorite Marine, Gaines B. Stanley, on June 9, 1945. They moved to Texas so Gaines could attend Abilene Christian University. After his graduation, GB began his ministries in Texas towns including Woodson, Shamrock, Olton, and San Antonio. In 1981, they moved back to California to begin a ministry in Anaheim. Jean worked diligently alongside GB, in the church office, supporting the members and serving the community. She was well known for her chicken enchiladas, pecan pie, German chocolate cake, oatmeal cookies, peach cobbler and the list could go on. Sharing food with others gave her great joy and delight. After 66 years of marriage, GB passed away and Jean moved to Cypress, Texas in 2013.
She renewed her acquaintance with lifelong friend from ACU, Kenneth Rich, who had also recently lost his spouse, Virginia. Ken was eager and excited to spend time with Jean. They were married June 20, 2015 and lived in Kerrville and Cypress. They enjoyed playing games, taking trips and cruises, and visiting all their children and grandchildren.
Jean is survived by her husband Ken, her four children and spouses, Gaines and Vickie, Mike and Lourdes, Judy and Alan, Tim and Lee, along with multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ken’s four children and spouses, Gail and John, John and Cheryl, Jack and Karen, Alan and Janis, along with multiple grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Jean loved being “Nene” to her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved fresh flowers, butterflies, lots of bright colors and fun jewelry. JEAN (Joyful Energetic Achiever Never gives up) had a memorable smile, a positive attitude, a humble heart and made a lasting impression on everyone she knew. She loved the Lord and tried to use Christ as her example in living her life.
