Thomas Unsell Mattingly, Jr. passed away peacefully on December 10, 2021. Born in Dallas on October 6, 1997, to his parents Pam and Matt Mattingly, Thomas was the perfect bookend to his older sister Ginny.
Thomas attended The Lamplighter School and then St. Marks. Thomas never met a stranger. His smile and laughter were contagious. When he was not throwing stuffed animals off the roof with his cousin Pete, Thomas enjoyed playing sports and pursuing his inherited passions from his family; be it cooking, his love of the outdoors, or hunting with family and his friends. The bond between his friends grew over the years. His friends remember Thomas as loyal, charming, confident, thoughtful, protective and funny. Thomas is remembered by his friends as someone who would flirt with your sister, compliment your mother and dance with your grandmother.
After high school it was on to the University of South Carolina, where Thomas again made lifelong friends. Thomas treasured each and every one of these friendships, as he did with his parents, aunts, cousins and mostly his beloved sister, Ginny.
Thomas is survived by his mother, Pamela Pappas Mattingly; sister Virginia “Ginny” Mattingly; grandmother Betty Jean Blakewell; aunts Mersina Stubbs and Lynn Mattingly; cousins Phin, John Marshall and Pete Stubbs; his Nana, Maria Aparicio, and family. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas “Matt” Mattingly, grandparents Helen and Pete Pappas, Oliver Mattingly and Harold Blakewell.
A memorial service will be held at the chapel at St. Mark’s School of Texas, 10600 Preston Road, Dallas, at 2 pm on Friday, December 17, 2021. Honorary pallbearers are Graham Gillespie, Jerry Hosek, Harrison Kampf, John Landry, Dan McClain, James McElroy, Charlie O’Brien, Matthew Senter, Pete Stubbs, Nate Thompson, and his ΣAE Delta Chapter brothers.
