Frisco resident Temple Pouncey died July 17, 2024 in Frisco, TX. He was 81.
Temple was born in Dallas on June 30, 1943, the only child of Temple Cone Pouncey Sr. and Janice Louise Weinrich Pouncey. He graduated with honors from North Dallas High School, Class of 1960, and from North Texas State University (now UNT) with a Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism in 1966.
Pouncey was a print journalist in the Dallas area for 30 years. He was a sports writer and copy editor for the Dallas Morning News, Dallas Times Herald, Plano Star-Courier, Today Newspapers, the Longview News Journal, the International Tennis Weekly, and the Van Alstyne Leader. He covered the 1978 World Cup of soccer in Argentina, two heavyweight championship fights, one Super Bowl, the Holiday Bowl, the Cotton Bowl, nine World Championship Tennis Finals and five Wimbledons, and the U.S. Open and Australian Open tennis championships. He was a founding member of the Professional Soccer Writers Association.
He was the author of “Mustang Mania,” a history of SMU football (Strode Press, Huntsville, Ala., 1980). A family historian, he was co-author of “Descendants of Anthony Pouncey” (2005), which is available on familysearch.org.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy Reserve, serving active duty on the USS Hunley, 1962-64. He was a member and former president of the Dallas Trekkers walking club and a member of the Greater North Dallas High School Alumni Association and the Sons of the Republic of Texas.
He was married since 1964 to the former Judith Ann Atkins. He is also survived by a daughter, Jill Pouncey Schriefer of Frisco; her husband, Tavis Schriefer, and his sons, Jonathan and Nicholas Schriefer; and first cousins Tony Pouncey of Marietta, Ga., and Steve Pouncey of Louisville, Tenn.
Temple and Judy lived 10 years in Sun City Texas in Georgetown, where he contributed sports articles to the Williamson County Sun. They moved to their final home, in Frisco Lakes, in 2016.
