Veteran radio broadcaster, Teddy (“Ted”) Carroll Sauceman, signed off from his final broadcast on February 20, 2024, passing away peacefully in his sleep. Ted was 83 years old; he resided in Dallas, Texas with his wife of sixty years. He left an indelible mark on the hearts of many.
Ted was born in Greeneville, Tennessee on December 11, 1940, to James Carl Sauceman, Sr. and Mary Lou Hudgens (née Smith). He moved to Carrollton, Alabama in 1955 and graduated from Carrollton High School in 1959. He studied Broadcast Communications at Elkins Radio School (1959), News Publishing and Radio/TV Broadcasting at National Defense University (1968), and Ministerial Studies at Berean School of the Bible/Global University (1977). Ted married Billie Diane Lewis on December 6, 1963. He never stopped saying that she was the love of his life.
Ted was a patriot and a proud U.S. Army veteran. He grew up frequently listening to his father, a bluegrass musician, performing live on the radio. Ted became fascinated with broadcasting early in life and channeled that into a career that spanned nearly sixty years. He began as a DJ in his teens and worked his way up to management but continued to use his signature broadcaster’s voice to record material for on-air use throughout his career. Ted served as General Manager of Sonlife Radio at Jimmy Swaggart Ministries (“JSM”) and VP/GM of KSKY at AMFM, Inc. He retired in 2014, after nearly fifteen years as the Dallas Market Manager for Multicultural Broadcasting.
Ted was an ordained minister with the Assemblies of God and held various pastoral roles throughout his life. He loved the Lord and enjoyed teaching others about the Bible. While at JSM, he was an adjunct professor at World Evangelism Bible College, and continued to teach throughout his life by leading Bible studies, community groups, and Sunday School classes through his home church. Ted was an avid photographer and loved to spend days roaming and taking nature photographs. He was a born entertainer, had a big personality, and always had a story or a joke to tell. He introduced himself to everyone by relating his hair color to his name, “If you can remember red, you can remember Ted.” Red Ted never met a stranger, he spoke to everyone as if they were old friends, and he had a knack for making people smile. He often remarked that, when he died, he wanted his tombstone to say, “He made people laugh.”
Ted was preceded in death by his parents, James Carl Sauceman, Sr. (Mary Louise) and Mary Lou Hudgens; his siblings Jerry Dale Sauceman and Linda Murrell Lawhon; and two of his most cherished friends, Larry Click and Jerry Cannon.
Ted is survived by his wife, Billie; his children, William Sauceman (Krystal), Shannon Sauceman, and Tiffany Ramirez (Abel); his beloved granddaughters, Aubree Sauceman and Sophia Sauceman; his siblings, Terry Sauceman (Joann), James (“Jim”) Sauceman, Jr. (Candy), and Sandy Horton; his sister-in-love, Cathy Brignac; numerous nieces and nephews; and other family and friends.
A celebration of Ted’s life will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at 2:00 PM at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd, Dallas, Texas 75228. The family will receive visitors prior to the memorial service, from 1:00-2:00 PM, and at the reception following, from 3:00-5:00 PM. Rev. John Prom, of Legacy Church, officiating.
