MOORE Sr., Stephen Louis passed away February 24, 2016 of complications from diabetes. Steve was born to Marion Simpkins and Lou Miller Moore, Jr. in Dallas April 9,1942, where he was a lifelong resident. He leaves behind his wife Melissa O'Malley Moore, his children Debby Moore Baker and husband Richard, Stephen Moore and wife Kelly, Theresa Schiff and husband Calvin, and their mother Judy Maus Moore. Grandchildren Marion and Kellen Moore, Lauren and Ryan Baker, Lily and Bobby Schiff. His brother Mike Moore and wife Chris, nieces and nephews Tina Stansbury, Marissa Farhat, Elliott Moore and Melissa's children Mallary, Beau and Austin Whitsitt.
Steve lived the first years of his life in a house behind his mother's shop, The Flower Mart on the corner of Maple and Oaklawn. In 1943 his mother decided she wanted to raise her kids "in the country", so they moved to what was then unincorporated Dallas County with enough acreage to have horses and chickens on Strait Lane. Steve married his first wife Judy in 1960 and they raised their children together in the Park Cities.
Steve's first job was cleaning his mothers shop as a teenager. He started Sweeper Sales and Service, sweeping parking lots and the State Fair of Texas. In 1969 Steve started Moore Industrial Disposal, Inc., 6 months later his brother Mike joined him. Together with one truck, taking turns driving and handling sales and accounting, they grew MIDI to the 2nd largest privately owned garbage company in the US before selling it to BFI in 1986. After dabbling in owning several other business ventures he returned to the garbage business with the help of his youngest daughter Theresa and her husband Calvin in 1990, starting Moore Disposal Corp. Steve's other children Stephen and Debby joined the business and together they've grown MDC to the diverse company it is today: front load and roll off garbage hauling, portable toilet services, street sweeping, event cleanup, large venue cleaning, and a range of recycling services. Steve has worked with the State Fair of Texas for over 55 years performing janitorial, sweeping, waste hauling and portable toilet services.
Ever present on his golf cart, Steve loved special events. His nearest and dearest being the State Fair of Texas followed closely by numerous annual events: Dallas St. Patrick's Day Parade, Park Cities July 4th Parade, Gay Pride Parade, Susan G. Koman Race for the Cure, Dallas Marathon and many other races, festivals and parades.
Words cannot express the love and friendship Steve's lifelong friend Dr. Terry Bacon shared with all of us both personally and professionally during Steve's last weeks. The family will be forever grateful for the incredible support we've always had from Terry and his wife Vickie. We wish to extend a special acknowledgement of deep appreciation to Dr. David Nesser of Dallas Transplant Institute, for his unwavering commitment and compassion in twelve years of Steve's care. A special thanks also to Dr. James Choi, Dr. C. M. Pellecchia, Dr. Kimber Foust, Dr. Kim Rice and the entire staff at DTI, Baylor Hospital ICU and Roberts 14 who cared so compassionately for Steve.
“Big Mo”, as he was referred to by staff, managed his employees not only as a Boss, but as a friend. Genuinely interested in all who worked for him and their families, Steve became lifelong friends with many, staying in touch with them for decades after they left his employ. The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff for their support as his health recently declined.
Steve is laid to rest at Sparkman/Hillcrest. A celebration of Steve's Big Life will be held at the Hall of State on the State Fair of Texas fairgrounds, 3939 Grand Ave., Thursday, March 3 at 7:00pm. Steve never met a stranger, he made friends every day of his life. Those friends, employees past and present and anyone whose life was touched by Steve are welcome to join his family to celebrate his amazing life. To honor Steve register to be an organ donor today or make a contribution to DonateLifeTexas.org or the SPCA of Dallas.
