Born Shirley Ruth Garrett on June 21, 1952, to Columbus Garrett Sr. and Blanche Bell Garett in Dallas, TX. She accepted Christ at an early age attending Faith Tabernacle COGIC as a child, and Griggs Chapel Missionary Baptist Church as an adult, then upon marriage, she became a member of Mosley Chapel CME, where she served as a Stewardess, Chairperson of the Christian Board of Education, and a member of the choir.
Shirley received her early education from H.S. Thompson Elementary School and her High School Diploma from Lincoln High School in 1970. Shirley is an alumnus of Texas Southern University, receiving her Bachelor of Pharmacy degree. Upon graduation from college as a licensed Pharmacist, Shirley was a trailblazer in this profession, being one of the few African American female Pharmacist in Dallas and its surrounding areas in the mid ’70s. She continued her education and received her Pharmacy Doctorate. While serving in this profession for over 45 years, Shirley worked at Children’s Medical Center, Texas State Hospital, and Kroger before retiring in 2017.
On June 1, 2002, Shirley married the love of her life, Eddie Fletcher Sr. She and Eddie enjoyed traveling, good food, movies, and trips to the casino. She was a huge fan of the Dallas Cowboys, Dallas Mavericks, and Serena Williams.
Shirley was preceded in death by her son, Garron Garrett; her parents, Columbus and Blanche Garrett Sr.; her brothers, Donald Garrett Sr., Kenneth Garrett, Willie Garrett, and Columbus Garrett Jr. and nephew, Sedric Punch.
Shirley leaves to cherish and celebrate her memory, a loving and devoted husband, Eddie Fletcher Sr. of Sunnyvale, TX; stepson, Eddie Fletcher Jr.; stepdaughter, Veronica Fletcher, both of Dallas, TX; sister, Frankie Garrett Heath of Plano, TX; aunt, Esther Robertson Green (William) of Dallas, TX; godson, Sedric Heath of Wylie, TX; sister-in-law, Cheryl Garrett of Lancaster, TX, Johnnie Wright of Winnsboro, TX; Brother-in-law, Cal Fletcher (Gwen) of Winnsboro, TX; nieces, Blanche (Sue), Angela, Kinshasa, Drekeisha (Teka)((Ken)), Sheila (Janelle); Leslie, Dee Dee (Quincy), LaQuitta, nephews, Donald Jr., Brad, Columbus III (Tre), Douglas (Suzanne), Anthony; a host of cousins, other relatives, and friends.
