In 1941, the family moved to Dallas where she attended Rosemont Elementary School, Greiner Junior High School and Sunset High School. After her graduation in 1953, Sarah entered Southern Methodist University where she majored in Sociology and Psychology. She pledged Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and participated in numerous sorority and university activities. She was an active alumna of the sorority throughout her life. She graduated from SMU in 1957 with a Bachelor of Arts degree, and was employed in the Social Services department at Parkland Memorial Hospital.
Sarah married James (Jimmy) Wendell Sorrells, a Dallas Independent School District teacher, coach and later administrator, on Aug. 23, 1957. She continued working at Parkland until the births of her daughters Susan and Laura. Throughout the 1960s and 70s, she was devoted to raising her daughters, and was involved in the PTA and many school and Girl Scout activities.
In 1980, Sarah began working at Texas Commerce Bank, later known as Chase, in a variety of roles. She went on to be recognized by the bank for her outstanding performance and service. She continued her career at Chase until her retirement in 1993.
During her retirement, she and Jimmy enjoyed traveling to such places as California, Washington, Oregon, Canada, New Mexico, Colorado, Germany and parts of the Northeast. She later traveled with Susan and Laura to California and New York City.
Sarah especially enjoyed regular luncheons with her “Rosemont/Sunset sisters”, friends she had since early in elementary school. She remained close friends with the “sisters” throughout her life.
She was a faithful member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church in Dallas for more than 40 years.
Sarah was preceded in death by Jimmy, her husband of 48 years. She is survived by daughters Susan Sorrells and Laura Sorrells of Dallas; brother Dr. Robert Windham of Dallas and Highland Village and brother and sister-in-law Jess and Sherry Windham of Austin; niece and nephew Mitzi Windham Jones and J.P. Jones; nephew and niece Zane and Shelene Windham and their children, all also of Austin.
A visitation will take place at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home from 6-8 pm on Thursday, April 11, 2013.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, April 12th at 1 pm, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 5923 Royal Lane. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Luke’s, the Arthritis Foundation, American Heart Association or the American Cancer Society.
