Ruth moved to Wills Point, TX in 1948, along with her family and was educated in the Wills Point public-school system, where she was a basketball superstar. She graduated from Cartwright High School in 1957. She moved to Dallas in 1959, there she met and married Scott Johnson and to this union three children were born, Leonard Mervin Johnson, Brent Bernard Johnson, and Calvin DeShone Johnson. In the late 1960’s, she continued her education at El Centro College, earning an Associate Degree. After obtaining her associates, she obtained a job teaching in Dallas Independent School District. She helped mold young minds at B. F. Darrell Elementary, James Madison Middle and ended her career at Pearl C. Anderson Middle School to be a homemaker and raise and nurture her children.
Years later, after her sons finished high school and were off to college, she went back into the caregiving field. This time around, Ruth nurtured infants and toddlers. She worked numerous years at Cornerstone Baptist Church of Christ as the lead toddler room teacher. She retired from Concord Missionary Baptist Church Day Care after a lifelong career of nurturing hers, as well as countless other children in formal, familial and neighborhood settings.
Ruth accepted Christ at an early age united with the St. Mary Church of God In Christ in Wills Point. She later joined Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in Dallas and was an angelic voice in the choir. At the time of her homegoing, she was a member of Greater Harvest Church of God In Christ, where she worshipped until her health failed. Interests that she enjoyed were working crossword puzzles, watching the hours and hours of Christian television, old western’s and classic black and white movies. She enjoyed listening to and singing gospel music and loved singing to her grandbabies.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and mother-in-law.
Ruth departed this earthly life on Sunday, August 16, 2020. She was preceded in death by mother, Gingerine; father, John, Sr.; husband, Scott; sisters, Josephine, Gertrude, Vallie, Elnora, Lillie B; and brother, Mose.
Ruth leaves to cherish her sweet memories; sons: Leonard Mervin (Gina), Brent Bernard (Valencia), Calvin DeShone (Felda); Grandchildren: Autumn Johnson, Mikell Stephens, Alicia Johnson White (Nelson, Sr.), Marqus Stephens, Shaunessey Roberson Gonzalez (Eduardo), Jordan Harris, Kalyn Johnson, Brenticia Johnson, Khie Johnson, Maia Johnson, Alaiyah Hodges, Sierra Johnson and Andreanna Hodges; Great-Grandchildren: Jason Stephens, Amiyah Harris, Katelyn Harris, Khalianna Stephens, Micah Hodges, Nelson White, Jr., Rhee Stephens and Marqus Stephens, Jr.; sister, Ethel Lee Hambric, and brother, John Woods, Jr; and a host of nieces, nephews, relatives, friends and many children (now adults) whose lives she touched with her nurturing spirit and teachings.
