Roy Wright Howell, Jr. passed away on October 7, 2018, at the age of 93. He was born in Coleman, Texas, on January 1, 1925, to Nadene Woodward Howell and Roy Wright Howell, Sr. His parents and brother, Ben Calvin Howell, preceded him in death. Roy attended schools in Coleman, making lifelong friends, playing trumpet in the band and riding his horse, Duke. His first job was working as an usher at the family's movie theater, The Dixie. While attending Rice University, he joined the Navy in 1943. He graduated from Rice with a BA in Economics and remained in the Naval Reserve for ten years.
Upon graduation, Roy began work in Dallas in the Republic Bank's credit department. During this time, he earned a law degree from SMU and met his future wife, Louise Lomax. His legal career started with District Attorney Henry Wade, but he spent most of his career as in-house counsel for Sabine Royalty Corporation.
Roy is survived by his daughters Catherine Howell, Ruth Howell (husband Gregg Medlyn), Barbara Christopher (husband Ian Christopher), and grandson Thomas Coleman Christopher. As "Big Daddy," he loved spending time with his grandson, Thomas. Roy enjoyed reading, watching old movies, attending the Dallas Symphony performances, and, especially, playing golf. He was a member of Northwood Club, where he had many friends and spent hours on the driving range pursuing the "perfect swing." He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church and The Dallas Petroleum Club. His family is grateful for the kindness and care he received at Caruth Haven Court. He was loved, and he will be missed.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, 10:00 AM in Cox Chapel at Highland Park United Methodist Church, 3300 Mockingbird Lane, Dallas, Texas ,75205. Graveside service will follow at 4:00 PM at Coleman City Cemetery in Coleman, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Highland Park United Methodist Church.
