Robert Edgar West, 86, of Garland passed away on Wednesday, July 20, 2016 at an assisted living complex in Dallas, Texas. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and friend to all that knew and loved him. He was born on July 8, 1930 to parents Robert Ezekiel West and Bessie Mae Holman West in Fannin county. He graduated with an Agricultural degree from East Texas State Teachers College in 1951, then enlisted in the U.S. Army shortly thereafter where he attained the rank of Captain. He married Elizabeth Ann Richardson on December 28, 1952.
After leaving the Army, he returned to Honey Grove, Texas to help his father in the furniture and undertaking business. In 1961, he began his professional career with Texas Power and Light where he remained until his retirement in 1992. He was well respected and admired in the power industry. He was a member of the Honey Grove Masonic lodge for over 60 years, involved in the Rotary club and a member of the Methodist Church.
He had many hobbies which included hunting, rebuilding Willys jeeps, working in his shop and gardening. He thoroughly enjoyed when the entire family would visit the deer lease where he would cook and make it his mission that everyone had a good time.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Elizabeth Ann West; son Robert E. West Jr. of Temple, Texas; daughter Janet Powell and husband Joe of Garland, Texas, daughter Susan Wishard of Aurora, Colorado. Grandchildren, Justin Powell and wife Jillian , Jeffrey Powell, Jacob Powell, Juli Powell, Tyler Wishard and Brian Wishard and great grand-daughter Annaleigh Powell. He was preceded in death by his parents Robert E. West and Bessie Mae West, sisters Maizie Welch and Maureen Overall and nephews Douglas Welch, Steve Welch and David Welch.
A funeral service will be at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home, Northwest Highway Chapel on Sunday, July 24, 2016 at 2:00 pm. The family will receive friends Saturday, July 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at the funeral home. Online condolences can be made at www.sparkman-hillcrest.com.
