Lt. Col. Robert J. Schafer, AUS, Retired, 93, was born 29 April 1919, in Fort Worth, Texas and passed away March 24, 2013 in Southlake, Texas. He graduated from Polytechnic High School in Ft. Worth where he was a cadet Captain in JROTC. He received an Associate Degree in Engineering from Arlington State College in 1950 and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Southern Methodist University. During World War II, he saw combat with the 31st Infantry Division as a platoon leader and as a company commander, seeing action in New Guinea, the Dutch East Indies, and the Philippines. He was recalled to active duty in September 1950 and remained on duty until his retirement in June 1965. LTC Schafer assumed the duties of Director of Army Instruction, Dallas Independent School District in September 1969, following an assignment as Senior Army Instructor at Woodrow Wilson High School, Dallas from 1965 until 1969. He was a member of Highland Oaks Church of Christ. He is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Vera Frances Schafer and remembered fondly by his surviving family. A funeral service will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013 at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
