Robert was born on August 21, 1944, in Salem, Illinois, son of John and Lois June Scannell. He married Dinah Buckley on June 1, 1968, to whom he was married for forty-five years, until his death.
Robert is survived by his wife, Dinah, his brother, Tom Scannell, daughters Jamie Zionic (Scott Zionic) and Jennifer Scannell (Tommy Mann), six grandchildren and six nephews.
A graduate of Eastern Illinois University, Robert was retired from Caterpillar, where he worked for twenty-five years. Robert was also a former educator, having served as a teacher and principal for the Argenta-Oreana and Cerro Gordo school districts. Robert loved fishing, John Wayne and baseball, particularly when the St. Louis Cardinals were playing. He never missed a chance to cheer on his beloved Fighting Illini, or any team that played Notre Dame. Robert, known as “Bobo” to his grandchildren, was a devoted grandfather to Patrick, Lily, Henry, Agnes, Amory and Helena.
Robert’s family would like to extend a special thank you to the family of the organ donor that, through their generous gift, allowed Robert the opportunity to enjoy five extra years with his family, and to welcome six grandchildren during that time.
