Robert B. Holland Jr.

Robert B. Holland, Jr., a loving father, loyal husband, retired businessman and devoted believer in Jesus Christ, passed away Friday, April 26, due to complications from Parkinson's disease. He was 82. Mr. Holland was born in Dallas, where he lived most of life, on July 20, 1930, and is preceded in death by his wife of 40 years JoAnne, his parents Robert B. and Artie Lee Holland, and his son-in-law Mike Dorman, and is survived by his wife of 21 years Mary Holland and his four children, 13 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Mr. Holland graduated from Highland Park High School in 1947 and from SMU in Dallas in 1951. He was President of the Kappa Sigma fraternity at SMU where he met his wife and mother of his four children, all of whom survive him, JoAnne. At age 24 he became Executive Vice President, and later President and Chief Executive Officer, of Comet Rice Mills upon the sudden death of his father Robert B. Holland, Sr., until its sale to General Mills. Thereafter he was engaged in the construction of apartments in Dallas, founded the United Car Wash chain in Dallas, co-founded the Brake-O brake repair chain in Dallas, and founded Royal Brake Centers to operate Brake-O stores in Florida and Georgia. He was a member of the Young Presidents Organization, Preston Trail Golf Club, Dallas Country Club, where he served on the Board of Governors, and of Park Cities Presbyterian Church and Grace Bible Church. He was a loyal, loving and devoted husband of both his wives and father of his children. He is survived by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their spouses: Robert B. Holland, III and his wife Beth of Dallas, William David Holland and his wife Callie, and Beth Dorman of Houston, and Kathy and Charlie Thomas of Kerrville; his sister Harriett Kirk and her husband Rick of Tacoma, Washington; his grandchildren Kathryn Holland of Los Angeles, Robert Holland, IV (and his wife Lorraine) of Dallas, Anne Holland of New York City (children of Robert and Beth Holland); Amy Quinn (and her husband Ryan), Callie Anne Holland of Houston, Sarah Holland of the Dominican Republic, David Holland of College Station (chil-dren of David and Callie Holland); William Peeples (and his wife Ellen) of Dallas, Andrew Peeples (and his wife Juli), and Preston Peeples of Houston (children of Beth Dorman); Clayton Thomas of Dallas, Mason Thomas of Austin, and Caroline Thomas of Houston (children of Kathy and Charlie Thomas); his great-grandchildren Elizabeth Holland and Holland Peeples of Dallas; and his step-daughters Eddie Wilson and Leslie Brosi of Dallas. Mr. Holland and his family desire that any contributions or memorials in his name be made to the Robert B. and JoAnne G. Holland, Jr. scholarship fund at Dallas Theological Seminary. The fund was established for the benefit of minority students by his children upon the death of their mother JoAnne Holland in their honor and in the memory of their faithful long time employee Floyd Collins Fearce. The fund has financed the seminary education of dozens of minority students since it was established in 1990. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm Monday afternoon in the chapel of Park Cities Presbyterian Church followed by a reception hosted by his family at a location to be announced at the service.
