Robert "Bob" Goldberg passed away on Tuesday, September 29th, 2020, at the age of 93. He was born in Dallas on January 31st, 1927. An only child, he was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Esther Goldberg.
Bob attended Colonial Elementary School and graduated from Forest Avenue High School in South Dallas, where he met the love of his life, Lois Jean Kalin. They were married in Ft. Worth at the ages of 19 and 18 in 1946. Their love affair of 74 years was a storybook match made in heaven.
In December of 1944, Bob enlisted in the US Navy, where he proudly served as part of The Greatest Generation until the end of WWII in 1945.
As a loyal community volunteer, he served on the boards of Congregation Shearith Israel, the North Texas Metal Recycling Association and The Jewish Community Center, where he was honored as "The Man of The Year" in 1964. In 2018, Bob was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award by The Texas Torah Institute.
Bob began a 65 year career in the scrap metal business with the American Iron & Metal Division of Commercial Metals Company in 1951, returning to his South Dallas roots. He started as a cashier, became an account manager and, ultimately, served as Regional Vice President of CMC's recycling group, where he worked until his his retirement in 1982.
Shortly thereafter, he realized retirement was not in his vocabulary as, that same year, he joined sons Kenny and Neil at Gold Metal Recyclers, where he continued his relentless, fearsome and passionate role, leading GMR to new heights. He created initiatives in South Dallas at GMR, including providing 1,000 free meals per week for customers, employees and neighbors. His love for South Dallas was the motivation behind all the guidance and assistance he gave to those friends and neighbors with whom he came in contact.
Bob Goldberg was an asperational, inspirational and larger-than-life figure in the Dallas community for nearly 10 decades. He touched and brought smiles to thousands of lives and faces from all walks of life. He was a gifted communicator and a straight shooter. His vision in life was as an eternal optimist; the glass was never half empty. You always knew where you stood with Bob. And you were almost assured of becoming a prouder and more fulfilled person and citizen if you were fortunate to be mentored by him. If you were a friend of Bob's, you knew he kept you in his inner circle.
