In the summer of 1944 she met a young gentleman by the name of Ernest Russell and by December 30, 1944 she became Rivers Lena Russell. They spent 66 years together until his passing in January of 2011.
A few years after her husband’s passing she moved down to Kemp, Texas with her daughter; Diane. She enjoyed living with her daughter and son in law, Dennis. She got a chance to take many trips these past few years with them. One of the highlights of her ninety-six years of life was being able to drive down to Galveston to touch the beach water. She also enjoyed camping and sitting on the porch counting the 20 cats at her daughter’s home.
“Big Momma” as her family referred to her was a homemaker. She enjoyed cooking for her family, friends, and neighbors. Big momma was very active in the church as well as with her family. She was known for making the best Mississippi Mud Cake. She loved being around her daughter, grandchildren, siblings, and family. She was very excited about having family gatherings, because she loved her family.
On the evening of August 2, 2019 after 8 years, Big Momma was reunited with her husband, Ernest Russell, her parents, 1 brother, and 4 sisters.
She leaves behind to cherish the many years of memories; daughter, Diane Rogers and husband, Dennis; Granddaughter, Wendi Tumey and husband, Ronnie Rogers; Grandson, Greg Sasser and wife, Hollie Lopez; Great-Grandchildren, Nate, Kaylie, Chloe, River, Carson, Aleaha, and Ronnie Wayne. Her sisters; Bettye Smith (Vernon), Shirley Allee ( Paul), and Linda Mouton (Ronnie)
