Richard David Murray, Jr. (Dave) was born into a U.S. Air Force family in Big Springs, Texas, on September 25, 1955, to Major General Richard D. Murray, Sr. (deceased) and Janice Collins Murray. He recently retired to his hometown of Dallas, Texas, and passed comfortably surrounded by family at the age of 66. He is survived by his wife Sandra Murray of Bedford, Texas, his daughters Michelle Murray and Danielle Huckabee, her husband, Chad and his granddaughter, Samantha, his siblings Patti O’Keefe (Kevin) and Mark Murray (Sarah) and nieces Kate, Brooke and Sidney. In addition, are Sandra’s children Jessica Daniel (Lt. Col. Brooks Daniel) grandchildren Stella, Audrey, as well as Patrick Mathews (Lauren) grandchildren Kaylee, Landon, and Dallas.
Dave graduated from the United States Air Force Academy in 1977 and retired as a Colonel after a 25-year military career. As a fighter pilot, he had several accomplishments that directly affected the future structure of the Air Force fighter and bomber forces for a generation to come. Dave followed his distinctive military service by joining JetBlue Airways in 2002 as a commercial airline pilot. He spent 18 years with JetBlue, retiring in September 2020 as a Captain. His professional philosophy was focused on taking care of his co-workers, subordinates and customers to create a positive work environment. Dave and Sandra were set to reap the rewards of a successful professional life that was unfortunately cut short when Dave was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer within months of retirement. With his faith in God, he kept a positive attitude throughout his uphill battle and leaves us without any regrets. He hopes to pass on to others that even with the best-laid plans, one simply does not know what the future holds. “Treat each day as precious and focus on what you can control.”
Dave, dad or grandpa was a very special son, husband, father and friend for those who had the pleasure of knowing him. We have been in the presence of a special man who provided a great service to his country, family, and friends. He will be missed by many as we feel his loss going forward.
