Richard R. Finlay, 80, passed away on Wednesday, October 25, 2017 after a brief but brave fight against cancer. Born in Boston, MA, on April 5, 1937, he followed in his father, Allan’s, footsteps to Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, a family tra-dition that was carried on by his two brothers and sister.
Dick was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity and earned a B.S. in Chemistry. His in-vestment work with State Street Bank and Trust in Boston brought him to Fort Worth, Texas where he met his future wife, Charlotte Williams, a sixth generation Texan who passed away five years ago. He was passionate about sailing, travel, photography, telling a good story, great wine and food, as well as having many friends from around the world made during his years as an officer of the Dallas chapter of the Confrérie des Chevaliers du Tastevin, as the founder of their Santa Fe chapter and as Grands Pilier Généraux d’Amérique for many years. He loved to craft complex real estate investment deals both in Texas and New Mexico and was a long time member of the board at The Winston School.
Dick is survived by his daughter, Laura Finlay Smith; twin sons, Richard C. Finlay and Charles A. Finlay, and his wife, Melinda; and his grandchildren who called him “Big Papa" - Emma Smith, Caroline and Claire Finlay; Collin and Ryan Finlay, as well as his companion for the last five years, Barbara Charlton.
His Memorial Service will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at 1:00 p.m., with a reception to follow at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the The Tastevin Founda-tion, Jonathan Taft Symonds, Treasurer, 6813 Northampton Way
