On September 8, 1923 Rhoda was born to Phillip and Annie Halpern in Tarnaruda, Poland. She came to Montreal with her family at age 6 and lived there until moving to Dallas in 1992. She was a brilliant student in high school, the top woman student in the Province of Quebec all 4 years. Unfortunately she was financially unable to enter university, having to work in order that her brothers could attend university. In 1946 Rhoda married William "Bill" Segal and they had 4 sons while working together in their women's apparel business. After Bill passed away in 1977, Rhoda continued working in the industry and in her 60s she finally realized her dream of attending university, receiving an associate's degree in Business Management at McGill University.
Rhoda always had a strong love of her Judaism and was a leader in the Jewish communities in both Montreal and Dallas. One of her biggest honors was to be the first woman ever to be invited on the bimah of Shaare Zion Congregation in Montreal. On moving to Dallas, Rhoda quickly became active in the community and served as president of the Seniors Organization at the JCC. For many years afterwards she enjoyed working at the Gift Shop of the JCC.
Though Rhoda's memory failed her in recent years, she always remained most pleasant and friendly. She took great pride in being independent and never wanted to be a burden.
Rhoda succumbed to the complications of pneumonia in her final days, passing away peacefully. The family extends great appreciation for the incredible care received from the staff of Windsor Senior Living and All Star Hospice. Special thanks to Carol Cottle of Windsor and Veronica and Matilda of the Adonai agency.
She is survived by four sons: Irwin (Anna) Segal MD of Dallas, Eliezer (Agnes) Romer-Segal PhD of Calgary, Eugene Segal and Don Segal of Vancouver. Grandchildren are Aaron (Stephanie) Segal MD, Debbie (Robert) Segal-Williamson, Yannai (Marina) Romer-Segal, Hananel Romer-Segal and Akiva Romer- Segal. She has seven great grandchildren, all wonderful. She is also survived by her brothers, Norman (Clara)Halpern PhD of Toronto and Professor Jack (Helen, deceased) Halpern of Chicago and her loving nieces, Janice Halpern, Nina Halpern, Wendy Peters and Karen Halpern
