REUBEN EVARISTE BROWN, the fifth of eight children, was born on September 23, 1935, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to the late Superintendent Evariste Brown, Jr and Louise Regina JordanBrown. Following a brief illness, he departed this life on Thursday, March 26, 2020, while living in Dallas, Texas. He is preceded in death by three sisters: Leovia Ruth Brown Jessie, Naomi Louise Brown Maxwell, Kathleen Brown Thompson.
Reuben was raised in Gretna, Louisiana and at an early age, he was baptized by his Father, who Pastored the Gretna Church of God In Christ; and Reuben remained committed to his faith throughout his life.
Reuben attended McDonough No. 27 Elementary School in Gretna, Louisiana and attended L.B. Landry High School in New Orleans, Louisiana, subsequently volunteering to serve in the United States Army at the age of 16 years old. He was a dedicated soldier who served in the Korean War; and upon completing his tour of duty he was honorably discharged.
Reuben, upon completing his tour of duty with the U.S. Army began a career with the United States Postal Service. He remained with the U.S. Postal Service until he relocated to the State of California. Having an enviable ability to meet people and grow relationships, he used his inherited business sense to start his own Reuben E. Brown Trucking Company. He was an insightful, creative and successful business man.
Reuben had a great spirit and an outgoing personality. Even in his youth he had many neighborhood friends. Wherever he lived, he always believed that embracing one’s neighbor is very important to building a community. He was kind and generous and made himself available to help anyone where there was a need.
Reuben loved to watch sports, especially professional football and basketball. He loved to argue his points of view. He also loved to talk politics, social issues, quote biblical scripture and reminisce about family, church and childhood experiences. He had a passion for gardening, liked cooking when he was able to do so and enjoyed family gatherings.
Reuben is survived by his seven children Reuben Evariste Brown, Jr (Felicia Renee); Robbin Brown Bell(Malcolm); Christine Brown Coleman (Jeff); Jeanne Brown Sparkman (Craig); Jason Scott Brown; Kenneth Brown; Karen Brown; 11 grand-children; 16 great-grandchildren; and leaves to cherish his memory four sisters, Lois Brown Johnson; Maxine Brown Dunn; Audrey Brown Burton (Collie), Jacquelyn Brown Warner (Michael); and a host of devoted nieces, nephews, cousins and friends in various parts of the United States.
A memorial service will be held in Gretna, Louisiana at Evariste Temple Church of God In Christ at a future date and time to be announced.
