Phillip Randall Allen passed away on March 6, 2023 after a courageous battle with prostate cancer. He was born in Houston, TX on October 28, 1953, but considered Lufkin, TX his home town. Phil is survived by his wife, Laurel McConkey Allen, son, Cameron W. Allen, and cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father, Woodrow W. Allen, mother, Kathalena Birdsong Allen, and sisters Patricia Miller Clark and Cynthia Allen Ballantyne. Phil graduated from Stephen F. Austin University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theater and Radio/TV/Film and did postgraduate work at Southern Methodist University.
A man of many talents, Phil started working as a radio DJ while still a student at Lufkin High School. Over the years he managed two Pizza Huts, worked as a marketing and promotion assistant for Tandy Center Mall, was the stage manager for several touring productions and numerous industrial shows, was the assistant stage manger and touring stage manger for Fort Worth Opera Company, worked at several Dallas Theater Companies as marketing director and box office manger, was the box office manger for Meadow School of the Arts at SMU, and was the Director of Marketing for the Dallas Ballet. However, Phil’s true love was video production. He created numerous corporate videos, worked in television production, especially as an editor, created the opening videos for many of Pegasus Theatre’s productions, worked as a producer and editor on many documentary shorts, was the editor for documentary features Waging Peace: The Peace Corps Experience, It’s Greece to Me: A Kid’s Eye-View, Make Me a Match, and was the Co-Producer/Editor/Director of Photography of A Fair to Remember. Along the way Phil won five bronze Telly Awards, one silver Telly Award, a Cine Golden Eagle award, one WorldFest Gold Remi and a Lone Star EMMY.
Phil was an avid sailor. His only regret was that he didn’t get to spend more time on his vintage 30’ O’Day sailboat at Lake Ray Hubbard. His first sailboat was a 22’ Venture and he enjoyed many hours of sailing with his friends. His other passion was scouting. Phil loved being involved in Boy Scouts when he was young, and shared that love with his son, Cameron. When there was no one available to lead the newly formed Tiger Den in Pack 4, he volunteered to be the Cub Master, and continued in that position through Webelos. He later became the Scout Master for Troop 861 and was thrilled when Cameron became an Eagle Scout.
In spite of Phil’s many accomplishments, he was humble, kind and patient, a good listener, devoted to his friends and family, and adored and was adored by the many dogs and cats that his wife and son rescued over the years.
There will be a reception in the Conference Hall of T. Boone Pickens Center following the service. Phil’s company’s motto was “We make a production out of everything!”, so wear colorful clothes and crazy socks in his memory. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Boy Scouts of America, T. Boone Pickens Center for Hospice Care, or SPCA of Texas.
