After a blessed 95 years, Peggy Black Braecklein joined her Lord and Savior on July 11, 2023. She was born January 15, 1928 in Dallas, Texas to Thelma and John Roy Black. She is preceded in death by her parents, sister Jean Black Hill, brother John R. Black,Jr, and niece Linda Hill. She was married to William O. Braecklein in 1950, and they enjoyed 51 years together until his death in 2001.
Peggy was a 1944 graduate of The Hockaday School, then attended Mary Baldwin College, followed by The University of Texas, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. She was an Idlewild Debutante and active in many organizations including The Junior League of Dallas, Crystal Charity Ball (Ball Chairman 1969), The Dallas Woman’s Club, and Founders Garden Club. She served on the Boards of Trustees at SMU and Methodist Hospital. She enjoyed memberships in Brook Hollow Golf Club, Dallas Country Club, Coon Creek Club, El Dorado Country Club in Indian Wells, California and many others over the years. She was a member of Park Cities Presbyterian Church and cherished The Good News Sunday School Class.
Peggy was a lover of all dogs, especially Maltese. She was an accomplished ballroom dancer, a talented pianist by ear, enjoyed golf trips, bridge games with girlfriends and her ladies poker group.
Survived by 4 daughters, 7 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren: Daughter Lynne Tate (Gary) of South Padre Island; Daughter Lou Cagle (Mike) of Dallas and their children, Michael, James, William and his daughter Carter; Daughter Jan Norris (John) and their children, Elizabeth Beacom (John) with children Jack, William and Caroline, Lynne Norris (Tom Tompkins) with daughter Genevieve, and John Norris IV (Katie); Daughter Gayle Braecklein of Austin and her daughter Lauren Ward (Kevin Schmidt) with son Walter.
Dear to her heart were the surviving children of her sister Jean Black Hill: Charles Hill (Jacquelyn), Carol Taylor (Richard), and Brenda Massingill (Ron) and the families of Harry Smith, Colin Smith, Heather Grassley and CarolLin England.
Also survived by her nephews John Black (Beverly) and Robert Black (Mary) and the families of Jill Reed, Alex Black, Christy Ewert, and Jacque Black.
The family would like to thank her caregivers of many years: Tom Tompkins, Joyce Mpezeni, Maricruz Torres, and Dorothy Nelson-William. And more recently to Faith Presbyterian Hospice and Jane Muhia, Winfred Chege, Maggie Anderson, and Rachel Muturi. We are so grateful to Grace Anne Woodruff for taking care of her affairs for decades.
The family held a private entombment at Sparkman Hillcrest Mausoleum officiated by Pat Hobin, Director of Counseling and Care at PCPC.
