Patsy Day, a resident of Pilot Point, Texas, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, May 5, 2015 at the age of 72. She was born on November 21, 1942 in Texarkana, Arkansas; the daughter of Samuel and Ellie-Margaret Yager. She was a 1960 high school graduate of St. Vincent Academy in Shreveport, Louisiana and went on to attend the University of Dallas where she earned a bachelors degree in English. She married her husband Don in 1963, and began teaching at Ursuline Academy in Dallas.
In 1986, she founded Victims Outreach, a Dallas-based not-for-profit organization that advocated the rights of crime victims and provided vital support to victims and their families. She served as executive director of Victims Outreach for 14 years, a period in which the organization provided support services to over 20,000 victims. As an ardent supporter of victims’ rights, she received numerous awards and citations for her work, including Texas Governor’s Award for Victim Assistance for peer advocacy in 1989 and a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S Department of Justice in 1993. In 1997, Gov. George W. Bush appointed her to the Texas Board of Criminal Justice, a post she held for 10 years until she retired in 2007.
She was an avid gardener, serving as a member of both Denton and Dallas county Master Gardeners.
Her daughter Jennifer preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband of 51 years, Don Day, son Jeff, daughter-in-law Elizabeth Allman Day, grandchildren Brendan and Audrey, brother Sam Yager Jr (Mary) and sister Virginia Yager Vincent (Ken); Numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, May 7 at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral home, 7405 W. Northwest Hwy, Dallas. The Rosary service will be held at 7 PM Thursday, also at Sparkman Hillcrest. Funeral services will be conducted on Friday, May 8 at 11 AM at St. Rita Church, 12521 Inwood Rd, Dallas.
