Mr. Otha Nathaniel Moffitt II was born January 20, 1926 in Farmersville, Texas to Mr. Otha Moffitt Sr., and Annie Kate Moffitt. Otha was the 5th of seven children. His parents, five sisters, and one brother preceded him in death.
Otha graduated from Farmersville High School in Farmersville, Texas. Otha was a Born-Again Christian with a background in the Methodist faith. During his childhood, he wanted to be a commercial artist but instead learned carpentry from his father. His favorite meal was red beans and date nut cake for dessert.
Upon graduation, Otha was drafted into the United States Army from August 1944 to November 1946. He oversaw 80 to 100 soldiers leaving from Dallas to Fort Sill, Oklahoma. His field artillery training included in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, Camp Polk, Louisiana, and the State of Washington. His final destination in the Army was to Okinawa, Japan. He stayed in the Army for an additional year after the war ended in the 3449th Quarter Master Trucking Company guarding Japanese prisoners.
Otha received the following 7 medals which are Army of Occupation, Asia Pacific Campaign, Good Conduct, Honorable Discharge, Army Professional, WWII Victory, and Enlisted Promotion medals.
After the Army, Otha attended San Francisco College majoring in Mechanical Drafting. After San Francisco College, he went to Wiley College in Marshall, Texas pursuing a degree in Physical Education. He played football as a defensive right tackle, wearing jersey number 84. He also played baseball, and his position was 1st baseman. A baseball Scout from the Kansas City Monarchs saw Otha play in the Spring of 1949 and wanted him to come and try out for the Monarchs, which was a team from the National Black Negro League.
During the Spring of 1951, Otha met his wife Katheryn through a mutual friend named Reginald. Reginald told Otha that there were two freshmen ladies who needed a tutor in Math. They met at the Wildcat Inn and he thought that Katheryn was an attractive and nice old-fashioned girl. While tutoring Katheryn in Math, a courtship developed. Otha and Katheryn married in June, 1952 for a total of 68 years, and had 5 children.
Otha and Katheryn attended Cedar Crest C.M.E Cathedral in Dallas, Texas for the past 21 years.
He always emphasized to his family the importance of keeping your word, working hard for what you want in life, and to always have money saved.
Otha leaves to cherish his memory his wife Katheryn Moffitt; daughter, Sylvia Moffitt; son, Otha Moffitt III (Deidra); daughter, Maugarra Hazley (Mack); daughter Sabrina Moffitt-Laws (Chris); daughter Mia Moffitt; 6 grandchildren, Monica, Quinson, Terrence, Stephen, Ebony, Otha IV, 7 great grandchildren, host of nephews, nieces, and other relatives and friends.
