Nathan Bert Newman died peacefully at age 92, on August 4, 2021. in Plano, Texas, with his family at his side. Bert was born in Dallas, Texas, on May 25, 1929, to Bertha Glick and Benjamin Newman and grew up in Olney, Texas. He graduated from Forest Avenue High School in 1946. He attended Texas A&M and was a member of the band.
He worked as a photographer for several years before becoming involved in real estate, where over the years, he acted as a developer, property manager, broker, land-man, landlord and investor. He was managing an apartment complex in Dallas when he met a tenant, Doris Hilton. Bert and Doris were married in 1964. His only child, Ben, was born in 1969. He and his family moved to Houston “temporarily” in 1975 so that he could oversee the construction of a major housing project. He didn’t return to Dallas until 2011. Bert was a kind and gentle father, spouse, brother, uncle, son and friend. He was a quick wit and generous with his “dad” humor. He greatly valued his family and extended family and loved to visit them and tell stories about his experiences growing up and his many travels.
Bert was passionate about photography, nature, geography, sports and traveling the world. He had visited 49 U.S. States, 10 Canadian Provinces and traveled throughout Central America, South America, Europe, Russia, Australia and New Zealand. He made several life-long friends during his travels with whom he regularly corresponded.
Bert was preceded in death by his wife, Doris Hilton Newman, his parents Bertha Glick Newman and Benjamin Newman, and his brother Sylvan Newman. He is survived by his son Ben and wife Rebekah Newman; his grandchildren Ethan and Miles Newman; his sister-in-law Barbara Newman; and in-laws, cousins, nieces, and nephews too many to enumerate. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, August 8, at 10:00 am, at Sparkman/Hilcrest.
