Nancy Macgregor O’Neil passed away surrounded by loved ones at home on February 17th, 2024, due to complications related to rheumatoid arthritis. She was born on March 16th, 1937 at Florence Nightingale - Baylor Hospital in Dallas, Texas to parents Anella Slaughter Bauer and Paul Smith Macgregor.
A 5th generation Texan, she is a descendant of C.C. Slaughter, whose family settled Texas with Stephen F. Austin. Nancy and her family continue to operate C. C. Slaughter Farms on the lands acquired in the early 1800's by the Slaughters. She attended Highland Park High School, graduating at age 16, and subsequently attended the University of Arizona.
Nancy was a consummate reader, traveler, gardener, and lifelong learner. She was a wonderful conversationalist who could discuss any subject with frankness, intelligence, and knowledge. She had friends from every possible walk of life and age. Nancy was deeply involved in her children’s and grandchildren’s lives. She adored attending family members’ events and loved nothing more than simple long talks with each of them on a regular basis. A beautiful benevolent force of nature, she had many advocacies, especially for children who suffered abuse and children with mental illness.
She was a long-time board member of Dallas County Child Protective Services, Mental Health Association of Dallas, and the Mayor’s task Force on Child Abuse. She was a founding board member of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center and the President’s Research Council at UT Southwestern Medical School. Nancy was also a past trustee of the Baylor Health Care Foundation and the Arthritis Foundation. She received numerous community service awards, including the PRISM Award from the Dallas County Mental Health Association as well as the Carmen Miller Michael Award for outstanding contributions for Children’s Mental Health, to name a few.
Nancy served on the Advisory Council for the Center for Vital Longevity (BSS) supporting it’s research to eliminate late onset Alzheimer’s as well as research to reduce the agonizing pain of autoimmune illness from which she suffered. She and her husband established the Nancy M. O’Neil and Dr. John Q. Stilwell Fellowship program to support Doctoral level research by young scholars in these areas.
Nancy was a former member of the Junior League of Dallas where she was President of Sustainers. She was President of the Women's Auxiliary of Children's Medical Center. She was also a member of the St. Michael’s and All Angels Church, Charter 100, the Crystal Charity Ball, the Dallas Woman’s Club, and the Dallas Garden Club, among others.
She is survived by her husband, Dr. John Q. Stilwell, her brother, Richard Bauer (Susie), her children, Will Rogers (Debbie), Blake Rogers, Steve Rogers (Nancy) and Stewart Rogers (Jennifer). Her grandchildren, Tim Rogers (Jamie), Chris Rogers, Bill Rogers, Luke Rogers, Rachel Rogers, and Blake Rogers. Great grandchildren Mathew Rogers and Jack Rogers. Nephew Buzz Bauer. She is also survived by her stepchildren, Laura Stilwell, and JP O’Neil (Leah), and children of her daughter-in-law Leah Lavoie, Vincent Gauthier, and Phil Gauthier, as well as her friend Gabby Lopez.
Nancy had close relationships with her doctors who took wonderful care of her, including Dr’s Stuart Owen, David Karp, Barbara Baxter, Anita Khetan, and Lucy Wallace. The family wishes to acknowledge the tremendous care Nancy received by the sixth-floor trauma care team at Baylor Hospital, as well as caregivers Sara Bruckshaw and Mary Kennedy.
Memorials may be made to the Department of Rheumatology at the Southwestern Medical School Foundation, The Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center, The Baylor Health Care Foundation, and the Arthritis Foundation of North Texas.
