Michael passed away Tuesday morning surrounded by love and holding his wife Judy’s hand.
He was born in Wichita Falls, Texas but soon moved to Lubbock where he graduated from Monterey High School in 1959. Michael spent his freshman year of college at Wake Forest University but soon realized he was a Texan at heart, and transferred to Baylor University where he ultimately graduated with a degree in finance and economics.
During summer break in 1961, he and a good friend decided to throw a pool party at his parent’s home in Dallas. His friend’s date, a lovely Flight Attendant with American Airlines, caught his eye and luckily for Michael, vice versa. After a year of long-distance dating, Judy and Michael were bonded in a loving marriage that lasted 61 years.
Michael’s business career began as Vice President of Texas State Bank and continued on as President of the Bank of Mesquite. He then went on to work for Merico, a division of Campbell-Taggart. While at Merico, he was offered a position in Paris, France as liaison between Campbell-Taggart and the French corporation BSN Gervais-Danone. He and his family’s time in France from 1974-1979 become some of the most memorable years of their lives.
Upon return to the US, Michael developed an interest in computers. Completely self-taught, his skills eventually led to the formation of his own company, Michael Mead and Associates (MMA). MMA developed software systems specific to the baking industry from the ground up. He remained with MMA as CEO until his retirement in 1997.
Michael believed in:
God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
He became a member of Westminster Presbyterian Church on January 19th, 1992, where for 31 years he served as Elder, Session member, Chairman of the Foundation Board, and Server at Austin Street Center until he became physically unable. The close friendships he developed there lasted for the rest of his life.
Michel loved fast classic cars and had a particular affinity towards all things Porsche; his favorite being a 1996 arena red turbo. He loved golf, tennis and old movies. His favorite place to be was on vacation in Angel Fire, NM where he enjoyed reading, hiking and the company of dear friends and family. Not to be forgotten are his love for Whataburgers – no tomato!
Michael was pre-deceased by his parents, Bill O. Mead and Vivian Douglas Mead; and his sister Jan Mead Clark. He is survived by his beloved wife Judith Ann Mead, his children Bill Mead (Lisa) and Ashley Mead Kennedy (Mickey); brother Stephen Mead, grandchildren Austin Mead and Tyler Mead, and step-grandchildren Jeremy Kennedy, Nicholas Kennedy and Paige Kennedy Singer as well as multiple cousins, nieces and nephews.
The family wish to acknowledge and thank everyone for the many expressions of kindness and condolence that have been extended to us during this difficult time. The family requests those who wish to express sympathy to consider making a donation to Austin Street Center or to their favorite charity in Michael’s name.
