Melba lived in Dallas most of her early years and married, Harris McKnight at the age of 15 and had two children, Donald Lewis McKnight and Carolyn Jean McKnight, who preceded her in death. She went to work at Neiman Marcus and received great training in the retail business, which was a great value to her. She attended night school at Crozier Tech High School in the early fifties and earned her GED.
She loved the big band music from the forties and fifties, loved to dance and always decorated her house with pretty things. In the early sixties she married Bill Durham and they moved to Oklahoma City, where she opened a Hallmark Card Store which was very successful and she retired after 30 years. She and Bill traveled some and enjoyed playing golf. Melba joined the Baptist Church in Oklahoma City and became a member of the church choir. She loved to sing in the choir and went on tour in Israel.
She moved back to Texas on June 1, 2013 to Ellery Arbor Memory Care in Colleyville.
Melba is survived by her sister-in-law, Betty Pate, several granddaughters, a grandson, four nieces and one nephew. She is preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, Tommy, Manuel, Robert, James and Wayne and two sisters, Clara Belle and Cornelia.
