“Mom” to only a cherished few and “Mema” to many, Maxine lived her life “her way” and was the “boss” until the very end! She battled an unknown enemy with grace, dignity, and humor for several months before being diagnosed with an aggressive form of ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease) in June. She passed peacefully from this life into the next surrounded by her loved ones on July 18, 2015.
Maxine held different jobs over her life, but none that she loved more than her final one as daycare owner and caregiver. She loved and helped raise well over 100 kiddos, who became like her grandchildren to her and who still call her Mema today. At the Sims Daycare, you were more likely to see pork loin and fresh home grown salad on the lunch menu rather than sandwiches or hotdogs. Her parents loved how she was able to get their kids to love veggies and eat good food.
If you came to visit Maxine, you would most likely find her on the patio, her sanctuary. She loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible soaking up the sun. Her favorite days were spent with Daymond (Pepa) on their boat. Her great passions were sewing, reading, cooking, canning, gardening, and hosting family gatherings. She was famous for her dill pickles, wilted lettuce, and mashed potatoes. Maxine was the central pillar of the family and she had special relationships with each one of her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband Daymond, her son Donald Flynn, her father Jesse Stutler, and her mother Norma Clark. Maxine is survived by her brother Jesse Jarrell Stutler and four children; Pamela Flynn-Steinour (Barry), Ronald Flynn (Rhonda), Sharon Flynn-Reed (Kelly), Vicki Byam (Robby), her loving grandchildren; Jamie, Michelle, Justin, Heath, Nicole, Leigha, James, Ryan, and four great grandchildren; Tek, Connor, Gwen, Gavin, and her many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Mom (Mema) we love you, we miss you deeply, you will forever be in our hearts. Give Pepa and Nanny big hugs from all of us and we will see you when we get there … “love you more.”
