Mattie Jewel Pittman was a gentle and gracious wife, daughter, mother, and grandmother. She was always known for her sweet spirit and kindness to others. She was born on October 29, 1925, in Wolfe City, Texas, to the late Raymond and Luvenia (Boots) Gould. They moved to Shallowater, Texas, when she was two years old. They later moved to Lubbock, Texas. She went on to graduate from Dunbar High School in 1945. She fell in love with Lawrence Clarence Pittman while attending the South Plains Fair. They were married one month later, on June 14, 1947, and to this union, 10 children were born.
Lawrence worked hard as a warehouse worker, while Mattie Jewel created additional income at home. She had one of the first daycares in East Lubbock. She took care of numerous children in her home daycare. She also did other things to earn income, such as ironing, sewing, and cooking. She later owned her own restaurant and bakery with her children, Mama’s Rolls, in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She was well known all over the area for her amazing rolls, cakes, pies, and more. She supplied several restaurants, stores, and personal customers with her amazing cooking. She was a fantastic seamstress with the ability to make everything from wedding gowns to designer men's suits, costumes, and more.
Mattie loved the Lord at an early age, and she walked with him all her life. She was committed to her Lubbock church, Church of Living God PG&T, and later, when she moved to Dallas, she was committed to the sister church, Dallas Church of Living God PG&T, where she served on the Glow Society until she became ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence Clarence Pittman, and her sons, Major Pittman and Edward Pittman.
