Mary Gunter Tyson

Mary was born to Thomas and Mamie Gunter in Sandford, North Carolina, on December 31st, 1934. She was the youngest and last surviving of the 13 Gunter children. Mary spent her formative years in Sanford, and she later relocated to Washington, DC, eventually settling in Charlotte, NC, in 1969 when she married Robert L. Tyson. Robert L Tyson passed away in 1977, and Mary never remarried. She spent most of her life in Charlotte.

Mary moved to Plano, TX, in September 2020 to be closer to family.

Mary is survived by two children, Thomas, and Dawn, two grandchildren, Hannah and Jonathan, and two great-grandchildren, Icelynn and Londynn. And so many other friends and family that loved her dearly.

Mary was a hard working person who held a number of jobs in her lifetime most notably a care giver to the elderly and a census worker.

Her dedication to her Christian faith was first and foremost in Mary’s life. She was actively involved in the church until she no longer attend. She loved her children and loved to be around other children. Mary had a passion for reading, which she instilled in her children. She also loved birds.

Mary will be missed by many.

A visitation for Mary will be held Thursday, December 28, 2023 from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Ted Dickey West Funeral Home, 7990 President George Bush, Dallas, TX 75252, followed by a funeral service from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.
