Mary Ann (Zatopek) McCafferty was born at Needville, Texas on July 16, 1916, to Joseph Roman and Maria Anna (Lubojacky) Zatopek. She was the second of five children and grew up on a farm. Mary completed eighth grade at Williams School at Needville.
On June 21, 1938, she married John Wesley “Mac” McCafferty at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Houston, Texas. Mary and John moved to Oklahoma in 1946 where they lived on a small farmstead. Mary also worked as a ticket agent for the Oklahoma Transportation Company for 10 years at Norman, OK. The family moved to Dallas and then back to Houston in 1965, moving back to Dallas in 1978 upon John’s retirement, where Mary worked for Bethel Baptist School for 10 years as a cook. While in Houston, John brought an orphaned newborn puppy home to Mary and she bottle raised him and named him Jeep. She taught him to dance for his supper among other tricks. Jeep was their traveling companion for several years.
Mary was a homemaker and enjoyed cooking, sewing and gardening. She loved the outdoors and liked nothing better than to go fishing and camping. Traveling to visit family and friends was a favorite activity and she loved to welcome family and friends to her home.
Mary was active in her church, St. Pius X Catholic Church, where she attended regularly. Her Faith was very important to her. She was a founding member of the “Over 55 Club” serving as an Officer for several years. She was involved with the Ladies Society and hosted meetings in her home.
Mary loved music and listened to the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in which the accordion player, Myron Floren was a favorite of hers. Her favorite song was “Beer Barrel Polka”. Bing Crosby and Loretta Young were her favorite entertainers. She also was a fan of country and western music.
Mary was preceded in death by her husband, John, of 52 years and her two sisters and a brother. She is survived by her daughters, Helen Johnson of Dallas, TX and Carol Bockemehl of Farmers Branch,Texas; One brother Leonard Zatopek of Pleak, Texas; Grandchildren: Richard and wife Sue (Ohio), Judy and husband James (Oklahoma), Denise and husband Daniel (Oklahoma), Diane and husband Robert (Texas), Herbert (Texas), John and wife Sharon (Oklahoma); Great- grandchildren, Thomas, Joshua, Andrew, Erin, Paige, Maddie, Justin, Jesse, Raliegh, Wesley, Brian, Kate, Anthony, and Donny; five Great-Great- Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
