Mary Altherstene Hobson Lee Was Born June 11, 1932, and departed this life on Saturday, March 29, 2025, in Desoto, Texas. Mary Was Born in Sawyerville, Alabama to the Late Lillie B. Hobson and Mayfield Carter and her adopted father, Richard Chavers whom she affectionately referred to as "Man".
They all preceded her in death. She was a devout Christian and accepted Christ at an early age.
Mary's husband Cleophus Lee, whom she called "sweetie pie" preceded her in death on October 1, 1992. Her grandparents Willie and Eva Hobson were an integral part of her life from birth, and she referred to them as ma and pa, who also preceded her in death.
Although her only child, Shirley Slay, died at an early age, she treated all her sisters, nieces, nephews and cousins as if they were all her children. Mary was the eldest of three siblings and the eldest grandchild of Willie and Eva Hobson.
Mary attended grade school in Sawyerville, Alabama and high school in Greensboro, Alabama at Hale County training school. She was the top student throughout all of her academic career which allowed her to skip several grades and graduated high school at the age of sixteen. She attended Alabama A&M for a brief period and then relocated to New York City. In New York, she pursued a career in the field of nursing and continued in this career until she moved to Sacramento, California in the ‘60s. She was not fond of the nursing procedures they had in California, so she retired from nursing and later went to work at almond growers.
Mary retired from Almond Growers to take care of her husband during his illness.
Mary loved bowling, playing table games and entertaining, so she made a vicious effort to play at the highest level all the time.
Mary relocated to Moreno Valley, California in 2012 to live with her sister and brother-in-law. A few years after Larry and Ora retired, they decided to move to Grand Prairie, Texas in 2020.
Throughout Mary’s life she was always an inspiration to everyone she met. We will truly miss her, but she would want all of us to keep going and doing our best. As Mary would always say, "be good to yourself and be good to each other." Descendants of the Hobson family.
