Mary Mathewson Bass

Mary Alice Mathewson Bass of Dallas, Texas, passed away peacefully in her home surrounded by loved ones on November 21, 2015 in Dallas, Texas from Non Hodgkins T Cell Lymphoma and neck fractures. She will always be remembered as a beautiful and loving mother, grandmother and friend.

Mary was born on January 25, 1927 in Dallas, Texas to the late Harold G. Mathewson and Frances Wise Mathewson. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1943 and attended SMU in Dallas, Texas where she was a Beauty Queen her Sophomore year and a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority. Mary was very athletic and excelled in many sports such as golf, tennis, snow skiing, water skiing and bicycling. In 1972, she won the Dallas Country Club Women's Golf Club Championship. At the age of 60, only a few months after surviving breast cancer, she rode her bicycle almost 100 miles from Vail, Colorado to Aspen, Colorado over four mountain passes in one day. She also completed the 100 mile Century Bike Ride in one day. She was a charter member of the Dallas D 200 Club and former governor of the local chapter of Who’s Who International Club.

Mary loved to play bridge with her friends, entertain her many friends in her beautifully decorated homes and she enjoyed studying astrology.

She will be loved and missed by all forever and always.

Survivors include her children John H. Bass, Carol A. Bass, Robert S. Bass, and Beverly B. Haralson. Her seven grandchildren, William W. Bass, Justin T. Stowers, Whitney B. Fenske, Tasha Bass McLean, Amber C. Bass, Eric W. Gale and Heather M. Haralson. Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Harold Mathewson and her son, Harry W. Bass lll.

A Celebration of her life will be held December 12, 2015 at 12:00 at Sparkman Hillcrest.

In lieu of flowers, Memorials may be made to Harold C. Simmons Cancer Center at UT Southwestern in Dallas, Texas.
