Martin John Rodgers was born December 8, 1922 in Brooklyn, NY. He passed away September 5, 2011 in Dallas, TX. Marty was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Army. One of his proudest moments was, as an 18 yr old private, to have been stationed at Schofield Barracks at Pearl Harbor on that fateful day, December 7, 1941. He served the remainder of his enlistment in the Pacific arena in the Philippines, Okinawa & New Guinea and was honorably discharged as a 1st Lieutenant. Using his GI benefits, he enrolled in Yale University & was a proud graduate of the class of 1949. Marty & his wife Muriel operated M&M Liquor in Dallas for 17 years before retiring. Marty is an accomplished writer & taught various history classes at Richland Community College & was a substitute teacher in the Richardson Independant School District.
Marty was preceded in death by his loving wife, Muriel Rodgers; parents, Martin & Elizabeth Rodgers; and sisters, Bea Rodgers & Jo Wimpee. He is survived by daughter, Karen Dee & husband Steve; granddaughter, Melissa Dee-Alford & husband Reggie Alford; great grandchildren, Steven Dee, Christian Alford, Lindsey Alford & Noah Alford; grandson, Paul Council & fiance Monica Forbes; great grandchildren, Veta Christensen, Tyler Forbes, Christian Forbes, Mallory Forbes & Colby Forbes; son, Martin J. Rodgers III; son, Geoffrey Rodgers & wife Marla; grandchildren, Garrett Rodgers & Jason Rodgers; son, Kelly Rodgers; brother, Len Rodgers & wife Marion; sister Alice Rushton and numerous other family & friends.
Visitation will be 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Thursday, September 8, 2011 with the Rosary being recited at 7:00PM at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home, Dallas, TX. Catholic Latin Rites service will be 10:00 AM, Friday, September 9, 2011 at Sparkman-Crane Funeral Home, Dallas, TX. Interment will follow at DFW National Cemetery at 1:15 PM, in Lane C. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
