Martha was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Charles Smith; daughters, Faye Renee Smith, Valerie Lynn Smith, and Robin Kay Atteberry; as well as her beloved parents.
Martha is survived by her devoted daughter, Amy Stokes and husband Richard; son-in-law, Billy Lee Atteberry; grandchildren, Amanda Burnett, Shane Clinton Stokes, Nicole Lynn Cole and husband Reginald, Carlee Atteberry, James Christopher Atteberry and wife Deanea, and Melissa Cortez and husband Frank; great-grandchildren, Madison and Tyler Burnett, Delylah Atteberry, and Nico and Gianna Cortez; her very dear sister-in-law, Sharon Carter and husband Charles; sisters, Peggy Cotton, Darlene Clay and husband Terry, and Jeanette Curry and husband Richard; brothers, Gary Darr and wife JoLynn, and James Darr and wife Wanda; her four-legged babies, Cotton and Tiny; as well as many extended family members and friends.
Martha will long be remembered for her big heart, her joy in life, and the love she had for her family and friends. Before her husband, Charles, passed away, they spent as much time as they could together in both work and play. They opened their own auto repair shop for 10 years, and while Martha mostly worked in the office and the parts department, she was quite proud of the fact that she could surprise people when she told them that she actually worked on the cars herself. When asked what her job was, she replied, “I’m a mechanic.” Martha and Charles love of cars wasn’t confined to their shop. They loved racing, and they would often go to the drag strip near Cedar Creek Lake, and they would take turns behind the wheel.
Another of her favorite hobbies was going fishing. She would catch the fish, and then invite everyone over for a fish fry. She loved to cook for her friends and family, and whenever there was a luncheon being organized, it could be counted on that she would always be asked to bring her famous banana pudding.
Her second family was the congregation of New Hope Baptist Church in Lone Oak, TX. She loved all the people there, and had so many friends. Martha’s family would especially like to express their gratitude for all of the love and support they have given to her over the years.
Martha’s passing leaves a large void, but she will be remembered with love and with joy.
