Martha May (Cartwright) Black was born in Breckenridge, Texas on November 20, 1927 to Dr. and Mrs. Hubert H. Cartwright, and died peacefully after a long battle with Alzheimer's on February 21, 2019. She was a fourth generation Texan and a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
Martha graduated from The University of Texas, where she was Sweetheart of the University in 1949, top 5 finalist in 1948, Aqua Carnival Queen, Bluebonnet Belle, on the Cactus Yearbook Staff and a member of the Chi Omega Sorority.
In 1949 she married Aubrey C. Black, Junior and moved to Dallas. She was a model and active in many clubs including: The Dallas Woman's Club, The Junior League of Dallas, The Dallas Garden Club, The Junior League Garden Club, The Lakeside Browning Club, The Dallas Shakespeare Club, The Dallas Southern Memorial , Topics and Trends, Woman's Council of the Dallas Arboretum, Les Femme Du Monde, Dallas Symphony Orchestra League, Daughters of the American Revolution-Charles Taylor Chapter, Kappa Alpha Theta Mother's Club, Opera Action, The Sewing Club, and Dallas Museum of Art, (where she was a docent and Associate Member), and The Park City Club.
Martha grew up with a horse in her backyard and loved riding, gardening, cooking and traveling. She was a wonderful friend, mother, and grandmother. She is survived by her daughter, Leslie Black Golden, and her husband Hawkins Golden II, and her son Patrick Cartwright Black. She had two grandsons: Gabriel Hawkins Golden III and John Houston Golden, and a Great Grandson, West Houston Golden. Martha was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She will be truly missed.
The family would like to thank her caregivers: Irma Puente, Mary Jones and the entire staff of The Tradition Memory Care for their kindness to her over the years. A funeral service celebrating her life will be held at 3:00pm on Tuesday, February 26th at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home in the Northwest Highway Chapel. She will be interred in Breckenridge, Texas. Memorials in her honor may be sent to Aware to fight Alzheimer's disease.
