He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Elinor P. Marshall, as well as his four children, Ann Marshall of Dallas, TX, Tim Marshall (Michele) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Geoff Marshall (Tess) of Nashville, TN, and Chris Marshall (Cathy) of St. Louis. He also is survived by four grandchildren, Sean Marshall, Kelly Jordan (Matt), Reid Marshall, and John Marshall (Callee); four great grandchildren (Kinsley, Kallie, Kayden, and Kodi Jordan); and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mark was born in Norwich, CT on August 1, 1932, son of the late John B. and Catherine B. Marshall. He was preceded in death by his seven siblings, John, Catherine, David, Frank, Donald, Benedict, and Paula.
Mark grew up in Norwich, Connecticut, the youngest of eight. He was an excellent student and graduated from Seton Hall University in 1953. He then pursued a medical degree, graduating from Yale Medical School in 1957. In 1964, he moved to Dallas to begin his private practice in neurosurgery, primarily working at Baylor University Medical Center. He also served as a Captain with the U.S. Army Reserves for six years, where he treated soldiers, including those wounded in Vietnam. He had a thriving practice, helping patients from across the region, until he retired in 1993.
Mark enjoyed traveling with his wife, Elinor (Ellie), and they made numerous trips to Europe, with Italy being their favorite place to visit. He also loved photography and documenting his travels. Mark had an amazing mind for historical details, and was a voracious reader of history books of any kind.
He adopted Dallas as his home and took great pride in his beautiful home, yard and garden. He took up woodworking in retirement and meticulously worked on his creations and home improvement projects. He and Ellie were fixtures on the veranda of their Lakewood home, waving and shouting greetings to their many neighbors and regular neighborhood walkers.
Mark had a big heart and a kind soul. He loved his children and grandchildren, and especially his wife, Ellie. He was loved and will be missed by many. His family would like to acknowledge a special thanks to the staff at Belmont Village, who made his last few years as pleasant and positive as possible.
The memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 8, 2024 at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org).
