Mark Anthony Altermann

Mark Anthony (Tony) Altermann was born August 10, 1940 at Old St. Paul Hospital in Dallas, Texas. He died March 12, 2017 in the comfort of his Dallas residence. A memorial service will be held at Arlington Hall at Lee Park located at 3333 Turtle Creek Blvd Dallas, Texas at 10am. He was preceded in death by his parents Katherine and John Altermann. He grew up in the Oak Lawn area of Dallas and attended public schools. Following four years of service in the United States Air Force he attended the University of North Texas where he received a bachelor and master degree. For a brief period he was theatre librarian in the Fine Arts Department of the Dallas Public Library. Soon afterward he entered the motion picture industry as an advertising and publicity specialist, first with ABC Interstate Motion Picture Theatres and then on to Metro- Goldwyn- Mare as Division Manager for Advertising and Publicity. During this same time period Tony started evening administration courses in Theatre at Eastfield and Richland Colleges, Dallas and also founded an advertising agency. One of his accounts was a gallery and he made the transition to being a fine arts dealer, a profession in which he remained active until his demise, having ownership and or operating galleries in Dallas, Houston, Scottsdale, Phoenix, Jackson Hole, Hilton Head and New York City.

Throughout his life, Tony was involved in numerous community activities, including chairman of the board and elder in his church, on the board of directors of the Dallas Repertory Theatre, The Dallas Visual Art Center, Cowboy Artists of America Museum, Kerrville, Texas, Santa Fe Concert Association, founding chairman and member of the board of the Right Alternative People that served the needs of juveniles in South Dallas and the Advisory Board of the Communities Foundation of Texas. He was also a member of the board and on the executive committee of the Uptown Property Improvement District that transformed the decaying, close-to-downtown area into a vibrant area for people to live and work. He also helped maintain the historical importance of Uptown by serving as president and on the board of directors of the Victorian era Greenwood Cemetery Association.

Tony remained active at the University of North Texas. Over the years he served as chairman of the President’s Council and was a member of the Chief Executive Roundtable. He served as chairman and as a member of the Advisory Board of the College of Arts and at the time of his demise he was on the board of the Advisory Council of the College of Visual Arts and Design. He was the recipient of the UNT’s Green Glory Award in 1999 and the Distinguished Alumnus Award in 2002, the highest award that the University can grant. He and late wife of 47 years (died 2010), Linda, established three scholarship funds at UNT.

Tony loved to hunt and fish and traveled throughout the world in search of a special adventure. He was fortunate to have good friends wherever he went. Tony leaves behind his loving and caring wife Jean, a son Richard Altermann, Richard’s wife Shanna and Tony’s grandson William who live in Scottsdale, Arizona. Also, a daughter Diana Madison and her husband Jeff and Tony’s grandson Grayson who live in Dallas/Edgewood and Tony’s granddaughter Kate Lin who lives in Grand Saline.
