Margie was born in Lafayette, Louisiana to Alan and Virginia Maier. She grew up in Houma and Lafayette, Louisiana. Margie’s devotion to her Christian faith began early. She was a regular camper at Kueta-T, a Christian girls’ camp near Norwood, Louisiana. She was also very active in the youth group at Asbury United Methodist Church, where she participated in workcamp trips to help the impoverished and expanded her circle of lifelong friends.
After graduating from Episcopal School of Acadiana (ESA), she earned an M.S.W. from Washington University in St. Louis, and an M.B.A. from Fontbonne University.
Margie moved to Dallas shortly thereafter. She joined the Junior League of Dallas and worked at UT Southwestern as the Otolaryngology practice manager for several years. Margie subsequently worked for G.E. Healthcare as the Senior Director of Risk & Portfolio Management Healthcare Information Technology. Her career also brought her to John Peter Smith Health Network and, when seeking greater responsibility and new challenges, to Health Management Systems (HMS) as the Senior Director of Compliance.
Although Margie did not give birth to any children, she gained two daughters, Christa and Diane, when she married Ken Pickel in 2004. Over time, the family grew to include a wonderful son-in-law, Cory Lockhart, and granddaughter, Sophia.
Recognizing that she had received multiple blessings, Margie sought ways to help those less fortunate. Her volunteer work included comforting the babies in NICU, building houses with Habitat for Humanity, and serving as the chair for the Dallas Fort Worth Region for Washington University Alumnae Group.
Margie is survived by, her husband, Ken Pickel; her mother, Virginia Maier; daughters, Christa Pickel Sawyer and Diane Pickel Lockhart; son-in-law, Cory Lockhart; and granddaughter, Sophia. She is also survived by her brother, Jim Maier and his wife, Michelle, their son, Andrew, and her sister, Elizabeth Maier. She was preceded in death by her father, Alan Maier.
