Her family gives thanks for her long and good life, seasoned with both graciousness and a verve loved by all who knew her. Marguerite was born December 13, 1922 and raised in Port Arthur, TX. There she met the love of her life, Truman Frederick Cook, serving him a chocolate ice cream cone at the local drug store. They were married on December 25, 1941 in Lake Charles, LA. Marguerite faithfully served and thrived in her roles as Army wife and mother of three children, Forrest Ann, Steven Edward, and Holly Lee through many years of active duty in assignments taking them throughout the United States as well as South America. Marguerite cultivated considerable talents as cook, seamstress, entertainer, and homemaker – talents that brought comfort and beauty to family and friends as well as her church community. She and Truman gave generously of their service to Churches of Christ, in Dallas enjoying a long relationship with Walnut Hill Church of Christ, whose members were their dearest friends, offering each other the comforts of companionship as well as solidarity in Christ.
In addition to all the small but wondrous ways Marguerite extended beauty and kindness to the world around her, she leaves the legacy of her family: her children, Forrest, Steve, and Holly; their spouses, Donnie (Forrest), Jeanne (Steve), and Rick (Holly); her grandchildren, Jennifer (John Gattis) & Emily (Clifford Nichols); Kristi (Daniel Curling) & Michael; Garrett (Amy) & Lindsey; and her four great grandchildren Ryan & Reece Curling and Ava & Eliza Nichols. Meme was the warm heart at the center of this family. They will carry in their hearts the abundant love she gave through her special parties, delicious meals, and soft hugs; they will treasure countless memories of the joyful family vacations, cruises and gatherings that she and Truman hosted.
Marguerite was grateful that she was able to live in her home until the time of her passing. Her family wishes to thank the compassionate care she received from Professional Caretakers, including Willetta Williams, Georgia Daniels, Emma Locke, Carol Stogsdill, Triena Darden, and Margaret White. The family is also grateful for the outstanding medical care provided by John Demopulos, MD; Blair Conner, MD; Baylor House Calls, including Nurse Practitioner Kathy Kinnaman and Jennifer Heffernan, MD; VITAS, VNA, and Altus Hospice Services, and most recently, Kathy Meyer, RN, who braved the icy roads to help during Marguerite’s final hours. The family especially thanks dear and faithful friends Jolene Marcos, Barbara Packer, and Wilma Hatfield. Their visits kept Marguerite connected to her church family long after she could no longer attend.
Hallelujah, our Mother and Meme has broken the bonds of earth and now soars on eagle wings, running and not growing weary, walking and not feeling faint! Her strength is renewed.
