Margaret “Mague” departed this life on November 19, 2022, in Dallas, Texas. She was born in Dallas on August 26th, 1927, to Victor Gomez and Refugio “Cuca” Maldonado Gomez. Mague grew up in the Little Mexico neighborhood of Dallas, where she attended St. Ann’s School. As a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic church, her devotion to the Blessed Mother led her to become a Guadalupana, just as her mother did. She enjoyed working diligently in various occupations, especially her employment at the Dallas Urban League’s administrative offices.
In her spare time Mague enjoyed listening to country & western oldies, especially Willie Nelson, Waylon, Hank Williams, etc. Her array of music favorites included the Beatles, John Denver, and music from the 40’s and 50’s. As an avid reader she was quite a collector of prayer cards, religious books and kept up with local, national, and world affairs, as well as articles on holistic medicine. Most impressive was her collection of recipes, however, we all knew she preferred to taste and enjoy different foods rather than cook them herself.
Her family and friends will always remember her as a devoted mother to her only child, Roberto. She absolutely loved spending time with her son, especially when he prepared a meal to enjoy as they watched the Dallas Cowboys’ football games. Not only was Mague a devoted mother, but she was also a devoted daughter, who lived with her mother most of her life to ensure that her mom, Cuca, would not live alone. Mague’s running buddy and eventual caregiver was her niece, Laura Chavez Schumann, as they both enjoyed going out about town. Calls from her Godson, Richard (Ricky) Pina would definitely brighten her day, knowing he was calling to check in on her. Mague loved kitties but she had a special place in her heart for Laura’s little dog, Coco, who visited her regularly and brought Mague many smiles and lots of laughter each time she was with him or even when she heard his name.
Mague is preceded in death by her father, Victor Gomez and mother, Refugio(Cuca) Maldonado Gomez, in addition to her sisters: Natividad Gomez Ruiz, Aurora Gomez and younger brother, Victor Gomez.
Margaret “Mague” Gomez is survived by her beloved son, Roberto Gomez, sisters: Magdalena Gomez Pol, Carmen Gomez Pina, brother, Alfred Philip Gomez and spouse, Diane. Additionally, she is survived by her grandson, Robby Troy Gomez, Godson, Rick (Ricky) Gomez, Niece and eventual caregiver, Laura Chavez Schumann, among many other cherished nieces, nephews who have great memories of their dear aunt, Mague (Margaret) Gomez.
The family would like to thank all individuals who were part of her medical and support teams in her life, such as the various staff, medical and care teams at Dickinson Senior Apartments, UT-Southwestern, Baylor Hospital, Rehabilitation and Wellness Center of Dallas, Bristol Hospice Services formerly known as Hospice Select, with special thanks to Fr. Delfin and the Hospice Chaplains who spent much time with her praying with her and playing her favorite music.
