Mabel Hamley Hughes passed away on July 25, 2015 at the age of 95. She was born June 26, 1920 in Vicksburg, MS to Dr. William H. & Mabel Roderick Hamley. In 1938 she graduated from Lake Providence High School where she met W.L. Hughes, the love of her life. They were married on January 4, 1942 and this year celebrated their 73rd wedding anniversary. In 1963 she transferred with the telephone company and moved the family to Dallas, TX. After 30 years as a long distance operator she retired from Southwestern Bell in 1982. Retirement allowed Mabel & W.L. to enjoy camping with their camping club, making many lasting friends and good memories. She enjoyed genealogy and was an excellent seamstress, cook, baker and grandmother. She always said, "Cooking with love makes everything taste better". Her girls fondly remember her staying up late into the evening finishing their Easter dresses before Sunday Mass and very few birthdays went by without a homemade cake. She showered her grandchildren with love and attention and they loved spending time with her. Mabel and W.L. were long time members of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Dallas. She will be missed dearly by her family - our daddy has lost his sweetheart of almost 80 years. Mabel is preceded in death by her parents, her brother William "Bud" Hamley, and her sister Margaret Mary Womack.
Mabel is survived by her husband: W.L. Hughes. Her daughters: Allyene Shoemaker of Royce City, TX, Mary Frances Hughes of Forney, TX, Louise "Wheezy" Livengood of Forney, TX, Mabel "Bunchy" Phillips and her husband Bob of Mesquite, TX. Son: Willard "Pug" Hughes of San Antonio, TX; 7 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.
