Luther Almand Bell passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2020 in Lufkin, Texas, his home for the past ten years. Luther was born on March 6, 1925 in Doole, Texas, the first of nine children born to Clarence Calvin Bell and Lula Emma Almand Bell. The family later moved to Ferris, Texas where he graduated from Ferris High School. On August 6, 1943 he married Margaret Ruth Dickerson, and for 72 years they were husband and wife and best friends. Two sons, Michael J. Bell and James H. Bell were born to their marriage.
During World War II, Luther was drafted into the United States Army and served with the 311th Engineer Combat Batallion in the Philippines from August 1944 until he was honorably discharged after the war ended.
After he returned home from the service, Luther and Ruth eventually made their home in Dallas until he was transferred to Houston where he continued his employment with Waukesha-Pearce Industries until his retirement. When Luther retired, he and Ruth moved to “the farm” in Kossee, Texas and built their retirement home. They spent many happy years at the farm raising cattle, feeding the deer, and entertaining family and friends.
Luther and Ruth were faithful members of the Westbury Church of Christ in Houston and the Church of Christ in Kossee.
Luther was predeceased by his beloved wife, Ruth; his son, James; and his brothers, Robert Clarence “R.C.” Bell and Harold Bell.
He is survived by his son, Michael J. Bell and wife, Carolyn; grandchildren, James Kelly Bell and wife, Tammie, Chris Bell and wife, Katrina, and Katherine Bell Loverin and husband, Cody; great-grandchildren, Justin Bell, Kaiden Bell, Christian Bell, Allison Loverin, Carter Loverin, and Katherine Ruth Loverin; step-great grandchildren, Joshua Baker and wife, Amy, and Lacie Baker; step-great-great grandchildren, Callie Baker, Chloe Baker, and Caden Baker; brothers, James E. Bell and Paul David Bell; sisters, Mary Edna Fagan, Betty Wickliffe, Billie Bloyed, and Nan Clark; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins all of whom he loved.
Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday, January 16, 2020 at Grove Hill Funeral Home, 3920 Samuell Blvd., Dallas, Texas 75228 followed by a funeral service at 1:00 P.M. in the Grove Hill Funeral Home chapel with Luther’s nephew, Jim Bell, officiating.
