Lois died peacefully in her sleep on Friday, February 9, 2024, in Dallas, Texas. She was born on August 23rd, 1932, in Mansfield, PA to Walter Benjamin and Iva Mae Moore Rumsey. Lois grew up in Mansfield, PA, a small, rural town. She attended Mansfield High School where she was President of her class both Junior and Senior years, participated on the yearbook staff, was a cheerleader and a member of the choir, and was in the Senior Play. Written by her senior picture in the annual were the following words, “Lovely Lois is liked and respected by all for her sweet and sparkling personality and her charming, well-poised manner. Let us hope that this blue-eyed blond will do as well in life as she has done in high school.” Words that held true her whole life.
After graduating from high school, she attended Nursing School at the Philadelphia General Hospital in Philadelphia, PA where she received her RN license and upon graduation in 1955, became an RN on the Pediatric Infectious Disease ward at the Philadelphia General Hospital in Philadelphia. There she met an Intern, Dr. Paul C. Peters, Sr. and after 3 dates she knew that he was the “one”. They married on Feb. 27, 1955, in Elk Run, Pennsylvania after she had graduated. They moved to Indianapolis, Indiana during Paul’s residency training in Urology. Eventually, they moved to FT. Worth, Texas in 1957 and in 1963 moved to Dallas, Texas where they resided for over 60 years.
Lois was actively involved in the community of Highland Park where she participated in the PTA, was involved in her children’s Cub Scouts, and Camp Fire Girls, volunteered to work in the lunchrooms at John S. Armstrong Elementary School, Arch H. McCullough Middle School and Highland Park High School. She was also active in the Faculty Women’s Club in which she was a past president of the organization. She enjoyed her involvement in the Dallas County Medical Society Alliance, the Crystal Charity Ball, the Craig Class, and her work with “Selected Readings in General Surgery”. She volunteered to visit the sick and elderly homebound church members from the University Park United Methodist Church bringing them meals and cards with words of encouragement.
Lois loved to travel. As she and her husband Paul had traveled to over 31 countries and all states in the U.S. except for 4. They both believed that travel was one of the best forms of education that a person could have. They also felt travel helps one understand and appreciate other cultures. Lois enjoyed learning about antiques, art, porcelain, crystal and silver and was an avid collector. She enjoyed helping others and was a dedicated mother and spouse who selflessly gave all her time in raising her children in a good Christian environment. She will truly be missed by all who knew her
