L.R. (Bob) Gibson, Jr., age 90, passed away peacefully on September 4, 2017, surrounded by his family. Born November 30, 1926 in Dallas to L.R. Gibson and Mary Melton Gibson. He graduated from Highland Park High School where he was Drum Major of the HP Band. He was the 11th Eagle Scout in Troop 70. After proudly serving his country in the U.S. Army during WWII, he graduated with honors from SMU where he was President of the Student Body, President of Phi Delta Theta & SMU Rhodes Scholar Nominee. He was a man of great faith and loved the Lord. He was a Charter Member of Park Cities Baptist Church where he served as a Sunday School Teacher and deacon. He also served as a Trustee of the Southern Baptist Annuity Board. He was a Charter Member and the first President of the White Rock Rotary Club, President of the SMU National Alumni, Board Chairman of the Dallas Community Action Agency, Executive Board member of the SMU Central Library, an Election Judge for many years and served as a delegate to several State Conventions. On August 27,1950, he married Nancy Chamberlain. He joined Fidelity Union Life Insurance, earning his CLU, and began a lifelong career in insurance and information technology. An avid Mustang fan, he loved attending SMU games, listening to jazz, playing
the trombone (briefly with Doc Severinsen), singing, politics, playing bridge and being with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy, of 67 years, his 3 children and their spouses, Linda & Kenny Stephens of Dallas, Lee & Susan Gibson of Tyler and Robert & Kathleen Gibson of Dallas, 9 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, his sister Nancy Witt of Mt. Pleasant, TX and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
There will be a funeral ceremony at 10:00 AM on Friday, Sept. 8th, at Park Cities Baptist Church in Ellis Chapel. Interment will be private.
