Judith Ann Lanious was born August 14, 1945 at Florence Nightingale Hospital in Dallas, Texas to Bettye and James Cabeen. She grew up in Oak Cliff and was a proud graduate of Sunset High School in 1963 where she formed many lifelong friendships. Judi earned a degree in Elementary Education from North Texas State University in January 1968 where she met her partner for life. She married Kerby Edward Lanious (Ed) on September 2, 1967. They lovingly raised their two children, Lesley and Tomas, in DeSoto, Texas, where many memories and more beautiful friendships were formed. Judi and Ed moved to Copper Canyon, Texas in 2014, and spent time being present in the lives of their grandchildren. Judi through her life, was definitely the driving force of new friendships for her and Ed wherever they were living, and made many cherished friends.
Judi worked as an elementary teacher, a savings and loans teller, an assistant in her father’s veterinarian office near the Dallas zoo, a assistant to rep for Carter’s baby clothing, and a support to buyer for AAFES. She was active in the Do-Si-Do Club, ESA, PTA, TOPS, Bo Bison alumnae group, UNT alumnae organization, DeSoto bunko group, and Woodland Women’s Club. She attended Irwindale UMC, DeSoto UMC, Church of the Disciple, and Wheatland UMC before joining BridgeWay Church in 2014.
Judi is preceded in death by her parents, James and Bettye Cabeen, and lovingly survived by her husband of 55 years, Ed; daughter Lesley Mantzel and husband Ryan; son Tomas, grandchildren Jameson, William, and Faith Mantzel; brother Steve and wife Liz; brother Tim and wife Lynn; uncle Harold; many beloved cousins, nieces and nephews; and many dear and close friends. Her loved ones all felt that Judi courageously fought to continue her life on earth as long as she could but ultimately her hope and peace was with the Lord of her life, Jesus Christ.
Judi lived a life rich in relationships with many precious friends and family. She enjoyed spending time at her beloved second home Cedar Creek lake (her home away from home), at home with family, and visiting and traveling with friends. Her grandkids describe Grammy as loving, selfless, strong-willed, thoughtful, careful, joyful, personable, detail-oriented, and loyal. Judi enjoyed spending time with Tomas and his Newfoundland dogs Lobo and Landry and enjoying her grandkids’ activities including football games and theatre performances with Lesley and Ryan. She will be remembered for her love and kindness, heartfelt handwritten letters (both personal, and as a representative for Wheatland church), her beautiful smile, and green eyes.
In honor of Judi, please consider sending a handwritten letter or card to a loved one. Many were Blessed by those sent by her
