Joyce was born in Lenoir, North Carolina, on September 11, 1934 to the late Dave Coffey and Barbara Elizabeth "Lizzie" Coffey. Joyce attended Corpening School, in the Hartland, community. She joined Mars Hill A.M.E. Church, in the Piney community. In 1956 Oscar Calvin Yount and Joyce Coffey were joined in holy matrimony. After her marriage, Joyce later joined Mt. Pilgram Baptist Church, Lenoir, NC, where she served as the Announcement Clerk for many years. In 1990, she relocated to San Francisco, CA where she was united with John Willie Farrell. After 25 years of employment with Syufy Enterprises, in Sausalito, CA, Joyce retired in July, 2016.
Joyce fell in love with Dallas, Texas, in 2013 when her son, Eugene, found and married the love of his life, Lady Elizabeth Yount, who lived in Dallas. Although Gene and Elizabeth were living in Brentwood, California, at the time, in 2016 Joyce decided that she was moving to Texas, even if Gene and Elizabeth were not ready to. So, we all relocated to Dallas in October, 2016.
In addition to her parents, Joyce was preceded in death by her siblings, Annie Coffey, Cornelia Faye ("Nealey") Coffey Michaux, and Louella Coffey Kincaid, and by brothers, Oscar Coffey, Cliff Coffey, George Earl Coffey and Thomas Solomon Coffey. Joyce was the sole remaining sibling.
Remaining to cherish Joyce's memory are John Willie Farrell, her son, Eugene Yount ("Elizabeth,") her grandsons, Nathan Alexander Yount (Boonsboro,MD) and Kelvin Bernard Taylor (Rachel); her granddaughter, Sabrina Nicole Salazar, Cedar Hill, TX (Salvador) and six great grandchildren: Jordan Malone, Christopher Taylor, Salvador "George" Salazar, Franco Salazar, Cali Elizabeth Salazar and Nicolas Salazar, as well as a host of beloved nieces, nephews and other cherished family and friends.
CHILDREN: Joseph Eugene ("Gene") Yount and wife Lady Elizabeth meant the world to Joyce. But her love was too great to limit to just one biological child. She fiercely and lovingly "mothered" so many others. Kathy Yount, (Charlotte, NC) and Leona Hicks, (Lenoir, NC) were very near and dear to her heart. Joyce loved her "Bonus Families": David and Ana "Neet" Taylor and their children and grandchildren: Nicole, Destiny, Taylor and Zion, (Gastonia, NC). Rev. Clinton Feemster and wife, Lady Millicent, and their family (Gastonia, NC), were very special to her. ChaRandle Jordan, M.D. and his family (Meridian, MS) were also especially treasured. She also spent many years of joy with Jack and Kaye Williams (Trey, Sammi), Pleasanton, CA.
GRANDCHILDREN: Though she loved to read, shop, cook and travel, Joyce cherished being a grandmother and great grandmother. She treasured every moment with Nathan Alexander Yount, (Boonsboro, MD), Kelvin Bernard Taylor, Rachel (Red Oak, TX), Sabrina Salazar, Salvador (Cedar Hill, TX). Grandparent time was also special with great grandkids (Jordan, Chris, George, Franco, Cali, and Nicolas) and she loved being their, "Mama Joyce."
CHURCH/COMMUNITY GROUPS: Joyce was a member of New Beginnings Community Church Mountain View, Dallas, TX, where Rev. Homer Thomas, Jr., is Senior Pastor. She was also a member of Naomi Chapter #2, O.E.S. Prince Hall Rite of Adoption, San Francisco, CA.
Joyce shall always be remembered for always dressing for the occasion with style and elegance. We shall always remember hearing her saying “OH, WELL!” and “I DO AS I PLEASE!” We could not have asked for a better mother, grandmother aunt and friend, and we will miss Mama Joyce every day. Her memory will live on in the hearts of all those who loved her.
