Born and raised in Louisiana, the son of Manuel and Rachel (Alexandria) Hickman, Joe was a longtime resident of Baton Rouge. In his early years, he worked as a caddy at Westdale Golf Course, before Blacks were allowed on the golf course for any reason other than employed services. After graduating from McKinley Senior High School in 1956, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Joseph graduated from Southern University, earning a bachelor's degree in Political Science in 1964, and a Juris Doctorate in 1969. He met his wife, Carol LeDuff, at McKinley High and they were married in 1959 in Fort Dix, New Jersey. After becoming a Doctor of Jurisprudence, Mr. Hickman was offered an attorney position at the Federal Trade Commission in Dallas. He took great pride in his work and truly relished the friends that formed throughout his 25 years of dedicated service.
In addition to being a selfless and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Joe was also a devout Catholic and ardent golf fan. Quick-witted, fearless, and exceedingly generous with his unvarnished opinions, Joe lived fully, honestly, and with great passion. A fierce and commanding presence, he was the kind of man who made you earn the strength and power of his love and heart: a worthwhile effort, to which anyone that knew him will gladly attest. Although we’re sad to say goodbye, we do so with peace in our hearts because we know that he is now claiming his hard-earned heavenly reward.
